We believe in farm and nature-based education.

Ecological literacy empowers kids.

We see farm education both as a means towards ecological literacy and a useful bridge between environmental sciences and experiential learning.

Connection to food, land, and the environment cultivates curiosity, awareness, and the drive to create change. In a time of intersecting environmental and social crises, we strive to help kids find a sense of place and agency within their own communities, food system, and ecology.

Program Location

We operate our programs on a small farm on Salt Spring Island, BC. The farm has a 120-history as a farm, with 15 years under the current operation. The farm grows 2 acres of mixed produce, flowers, and fruit using organic practices. The full property is 24 acres of southwest facing slopes leading to Bullock Lake and includes pasture, marshland, and forest in addition the growing fields.

This will be our third season using this background to offer a variety of programming. In addition to our farm school and camp programs, we collaborate with the Circle Education to offer the Pass It On Boys program.

We believe that small farms have big potential as community hubs and places learn, connect, and grow.

Current Programs

  • Farm School Program

Designed to complement and enhance BC curriculum, our program invites students to get their hands dirty as they participate in a full season on a working farm. Activities range from seeding in the greenhouse, planting and harvesting in our learning garden, feeding animals, and cooking in the farm kitchen.

  • Summer Day Camp

Our camp provides an immersive farm experience where kids can be free to try new things, be silly, and build confidence. A day camp includes farm and animal chores, shared meals, arts and crafts, and creative play. All of our staff are highly capable and passionate farm educators. We maintain a camper to staff ratio of 5 to 1.

Our team

  • Molly Wilson

    CO-FOUNDER + EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Molly co-owns and manages Bullock Lake Farm and is one of our farm educators. She loves co-creating curriculum that bridges farming, ecology, and community. Molly was first drawn to farming through farm camps and schools, first as a child, then as a teenager and young adult working with kids. From Sonoma County, California, Molly has a background in Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz, where a vibrant working/teaching farm shaped her vision of farm education. She’s passionate about community and youth engagement, and facilitating a sense of purpose and place in a changing world.

  • Zack Hemstreet

    FARM EDUCATOR

Zack grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, leaving as a young adult to pursue a long and varied path that led him to Salt Spring 15 years ago. Along the way, he worked as a research diver in Central America, did restoration ecology work in Sri Lanka, and worked in a youth wilderness and ecology camp in Alaska. Zack attended university as an adult studying Social Ecology and Interamerican Studies at a small university in Burlington, Vermont. Zack and Molly are the founders of Bullock Lake Farm, where Zack is still head farmer and creator of some of camp’s most exciting activities. Giant slip n’ slide, epic water fights - that’s Zack.

  • Sam Schuette

    CAMP COORDINATION

Sam first found his passion for farming working at Salt and Harrow Farm in Tsawwassen. From there, he’s continued to study agriculture and sustainable ways of growing, deepening his understanding of the food we eat. Sam has worked at summer camps across BC and gained an incredible amount of hands on experience in the field. He currently works at Gulf Islands Secondary School as an Educational Assistant, further developing his career of working with youth. Neighbourhood Farm Schools is the perfect combination of his two passions, and Sam is looking forward to coming back for a second year in a leadership role to make the camp experience the best it can be.

  • Robin Jenkinson

FARM SCHOOL PROGRAM CO-COORDINATOR + EDUCATOR

In 2017, Robin coordinated the construction of the Salt Spring Elementary School Gardens and has facilitated garden activities and events since then. With a background in botany and biology, and three school garden education certifications, she's organized numerous Sharing Circles across the Gulf Islands School District for school garden champions, and continues to help fundraise and support these extraordinary efforts as well as the Bullock Lake Farm School Program, in part, as a Wild BC Facilitator with the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.

  • Sophia Gregory

    CO-FOUNDER

Sophia Gregory came to Bullock Lake Farm as a young farmer interested in agroecology, equitable food systems, education, and community building. She spent 3 years at the farm, during which time she won a Pathy Foundation Fellowship, and, alongside Molly, created Neighbourhood Farm Schools and served as Executive Director for 2 years. She holds a degree in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from McGill University, and farmed at Bullock Lake Farm for three seasons, developing her skills as a farmer and Community Supported Agriculture manager. She remains a dear friend of the program, and her warmth, enthusiasm, and organization are woven into everything we do.
